Few studies have comprehensively evaluated the effect of changing land use on the soil quality in Ecuadorian amazon region that subject to continued deforestation processes. This study evaluated the influence of different types of land use on soil quality using an integrated soil quality index (SQI) with minimum set of indicators, based on 140 soil samples from 7 land use types, in seven productive distinct landscapes in the Pastaza province, Ecuador. The land use type evaluated were: Chakra_A, Chakra_B, Chakra_C, Cattle_A, Cattle_B, Cattle_C and Forest. Land use type had significant effects on soil properties and thus on soil quality. Soil quality index was developed by using, AP, Zn, TOC, BD and LL; AP and Zn had highest weighting values (0.38), which indicated that these indicators contributed the most to final SQI. In general, the SQI decreased as soil depth increased and for each type of land use, in the surface layer (0-10cm) the uses of Chakra_A (0.46) and forest (0.44) showed the highest SQI, while for the second depth (10-30cm), Chakra_A (0.45) and Chakra_B (0.43) presented significantly higher SQIs than the other land uses. The applied SQI can be used to assess the effect of changes on land use on soil quality in other landscapes of the Ecuadorian Amazon Region.

Water resources management is fundamental for rural communities in drylands. Water Harvesting Technologies (WHT) intercept and store the excess rainfall (surface runoff) in soils for increased plant available water and agricultural productivity. The so-called ‘Marab’ WHT was initially developed by Middle Eastern agro-pastoralists that reside or commute in semi-arid and arid rangelands. The Marab WHT is a macro-catchment measure consisting of earth dams and stone spillways along the contours of a lowland depression or floodplain. Dependent on the local context (i.e. climate, soil, management, etc.) the established Marabs show highly-variable effectiveness. This study aims at filling the knowledge gap on the WHT’s performance in changing environments by simulating its hydro-agrological effects for different soils and climatic conditions using the AquaCrop model. A case study performed for a Jordanian Marab over three seasons (2019-2022) confirms its huge improvement potential for barley production. Through Marab-farming, barley production reached 8.37 t ha -1 on average, versus highly variable 0.34 t ha -1 without the WHT. The simulation-based assessment of soil textures identified that silty soils have the largest potential for producing up to 9.25 t ha -1 barley, compared to 6.60 t ha -1 produced in clay soils. Assessing different climate scenarios, a slight increase in daily average temperatures (+ 0.5°C) led to a considerable production decline of 4-8%, while a significant reduction of precipitation (-20%) decreased biomass production by a similar rate (4-10%). This underlines the robustness of the ‘Marab’ WHT to rainfall amount variation. However, simulations also highlight the sensitivity of timing and frequency of flood events: removing the last and the first flood event reduced biomass production by approximately 50% and 80% respectively, while the barley fails to develop if both events were suppressed.

Excessive salts in soil inhibit enzyme activity, decrease microbial growth and constrain biochemical functioning, which could be alleviated by soil management and fertilization. However, the effect of consecutive chemical fertilizer on soil bacterial community structure under saline environment is poorly understood. Here, a field randomized block design under four nitrogen fertilization rates (0, 150, 300, and 450 kg N hm-2 y-1) was conducted on coastal salt-affected Fluvo-aquic soil. Effect of nitrogen fertilization rates on soil properties and bacterial community was characterized using Illumina Miseq sequencing for 16S rRNA gene. Results indicated that consecutive chemical N fertilization accelerated the improvement of soil chemical and microbial properties under the paddy rice - winter wheat rotation. Soil bacterial community well responded to the nitrogen fertilization and community richness and diversity increased with the nitrogen rates. Predominant bacterial phyla belonged to Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria and Planctomycetes, whereas Deltaproteobacteria, Anaerolineae, Alphaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Planctomycetia were dominant bacterial classes. Increasing nitrogen fertilization resulted in an elevation in the relative abundance of classes Alphaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, Planctomycetia and Nitrospira, and a decline in Anaerolineae, Acidobacteria_Gp6, Cytophagia, Bacilli and Acidobacteria_Gp10. Clear separations in the bacterial communities at class level were observed under different nitrogen fertilization rates. Community structure of classes Alphaproteobacteria, Planctomycetia and Nitrospira was significantly influenced by potential nitrification rate (PNR), and community structure of class Actinobacteria was significantly influenced by carbon mineralization rate (CMR). The results demonstrated that nitrogen fertilization improved nutrients and metabolic activities to more suitable bacterial microhabitats for saline soil.

Global climate change is expected to increase the frequency of drought and heavy precipitation, which could create more frequent drying-rewetting cycles (DWC) in the soils. Although DWC effects on SOC decomposition has been widely studied, the effect of DWC and the subsequent legacy effect on the decomposition of different SOC pools is still unclear. We conducted a 128-d laboratory incubation to investigate the DWC effects by using soils from old-field for 15 years (OF, representing active SOC), bare-fallow for 15 years (BF), and bare-fallow for 23 years plus extra 815-d incubation (BF+, representing relatively resistant SOC). The experiment included nine 10-d DWC of three treatments: 1) constant-moisture at 60% WHC, 2) mild DWC with 10-d drying to 40% WHC and rewetting to 80% WHC, and 3) strong DWC with 10-d drying to 20% WHC and rewetting to 100% WHC. Following DWC period, there was a 10-d stabilization period (adjusting all treatments to 60% WHC), and then a 28-d extended incubation. During DWC period, the strong DWC had strong effect on CO2 release compared with the constant-moisture control, reducing the SOC decomposition from OF by 8% and BF by 10%, while increasing the SOC decomposition of BF+ by 16%. During extended period, both mild and strong DWC significantly increased SOC mineralization of OF, but decreased that of BF and BF+. This legacy effect compensated the changes in CO2 release during DWC period, resulting in the minor response of SOC decomposition of OF and BF+ to the DWC during the entire incubation.

This paper reported the recovery of desert plant communities after twenty years of oil-derived hydrocarbon contamination in desert habitats of Kuwait, caused by the First Gulf War (1990 – 1991). The hypothesis that certain native desert plant species can tolerate weathered oil-polluted soils with oil breakdown products (i.e., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons ( PAHs)) and have the potential to function as bioindicators and phytoremediator species for oil-polluted soil was tested. A field survey of 200 quadrat sampling plots at seven hydrocarbon-contaminated and unpolluted desert areas in Kuwait was performed that recorded 42 plant species, with Haloxylon salicornicum, Cyperus conglomeratus and Rhanterium epapposum as the most dominant species. Analysis of plant tissues indicated plant uptake and accumulation of some PAHs. H. salicornicum was used as a representative species in a controlled field study that included growth of plants in hydrocarbon-polluted and unpolluted soils in two separate desert areas under similar growth conditions. Results showed a significant decrease in plant biomass in oil-contaminated soil compared to those from the uncontaminated site. However, the plants appeared green and healthy in both sites, and showed no overt stress. The results suggest that some desert plant communities exhibit signs of recovery after severe oil pollution, and that H. salicornicum may serve as a phytoremediator of oil-contaminated desert soils. Our results also demonstrated that some desert plant communities could be cultivated in oil fields to reduce hydrocarbon contamination and provide guide to other ecosystem services through improving soil quality and biodiversity.

Wind erosion is the main form of soil erosion in arid and semi-arid areas. It leads to soil loss and land degradation, which aggravates ecosystem vulnerability and threatens regional sustainable development. The assessment of wind erosion and the study of its driving factors can reduce soil wind erosion and provide decision-making assistance to solve environmental problems. Southern Africa is affected by severe soil erosion, which has brought a series of development problems, such as food crises and poverty. This study used meteorological and remote sensing data, and the revised wind erosion equation model to explore the temporal and spatial dynamics of soil erosion in southern Africa from 1991 to 2015. The impact of climate dynamics on soil wind erosion was also analyzed. The results showed that wind erosion fluctuated during the study period, and it first showed a downward trend and then stabilized at a relatively low level after 2010. Soil wind erosion across 66.65% of the study area significantly decreased (p < 0.05) and near-surface wind speed was the most important factor. The change in wind speed had a positive impact on soil wind erosion across 68.18% of the area. Temperature and precipitation were significantly related to soil wind erosion over 18.96% and 24.63% of the area, respectively. Both can also indirectly affect soil wind erosion through their effects on vegetation cover. This study will help decision-makers to evaluate areas that are at high-risk from soil erosion in southern Africa and enable them to effectively protect fragile ecosystems.

Extreme droughts of increased frequency due to climate change poses great challenges to the sustainability of plantations in drylands worldwide. Millions of plantations on China’s Loess Plateau which are mainly in drylands are threatened by serious degradation due to water scarcity. Here we aim to disentangle the impacts of combinations of terracing and mulching on water use strategy and its response to extreme droughts in a rainfed jujube (Ziziphus jujuba) plantation on the semiarid Loess Plateau, using three-year in situ field observations. Pruned jujube branches and maize straw were mulched on half-moon terraces to form two combined treatments, referred to as JBT and MST, respectively. The efficacy of these two combinations on the water use strategy of jujube trees was compared with terracing alone (SHT) and control (no terrace). We found that extreme drought clearly reduced soil water storage (SWS) under all treatments. However, the combined treatments showed significantly (P<0.05) higher SWS than the SHT and control. Furthermore, the combined treatments enhanced soil water use in deep layers during both normal and drought years, thus helping jujube trees to resist droughts. Moreover, the extreme drought significantly reduced transpiration whereas the moderate drought increased transpiration at both seasonal and annual scales. Nonetheless, the combined treatments were associated with enhanced transpiration compared to the SHT and control during drought periods. Finally, jujube trees exhibited isohydric behavior which also helped them to cope with prolonged droughts. Overall, the findings here may provide insights into land management of dryland plantations worldwide under climate change.

Tobacco production and curing is the single most important contributor to soil degradation and deforestation. To minimise the environmental effects of tobacco production, the environmentally friendly, and energy-efficient rocket barns technology was developed. In spite of its energy saving and environmental benefits, the adoption of rocket barns remains low and understudied. This paper assessed farmers perception and factors affecting the adoption of rocket barn technology. Data was collected using in a cross-sectional survey using structured questionnaires were from 242 Flue Cured Virginia (FCV) tobacco farmers in Uganda. Analysed was done using SPSS and STATA software. Results show that the adoption of rocket barn technology was low, at 12%, with farmers. Farmers perceived adopting the rocket barns technology to be risky and costly. Experience, training, distance to wood fuel, access to extension information, and benefits and risk perceptions were the major determinants of adoption of rocket barns technology. Promotion and adoption of rocket barns technology will require concerted sensitization and training of farmers on the environmental benefits of rocket barn technology. Emphasis such efforts should target the relatively young and inexperienced FCV tobacco farmers.

Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa), a herbaceous annual, has been widely cultivated in recent years because of its high nutritional value and strong tolerance to abiotic stresses. The study was conducted at two planting densities (LD, 10 plants/m2; HD, 65 plants/m2) on ameliorated coastal mudflats in Jiangsu Province, China (118° 46′ E, 32° 03′ N). The results showed soil salinity and organic matter were higher in the HD than LD treatment, and salinity of the rhizosphere soil was higher than that of the non-rhizosphere soil. Quinoa grown in HD was taller, with thicker stalks and lower yields per plant, but higher yield per unit area. Amplicon sequencing showed that Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota and Acidobacteria were the dominant bacterial phyla. Regarding the rhizosphere soil, the Shannon index was higher in the HD than LD, and Proteobacteria and Bacteroidota were more abundant in the HD treatment. Fifty-one differential metabolites were identified by metabolomic assays, belonging to 14 annotated metabolic pathways. S-adenosylmethionine was the most abundant and up-regulated metabolite (fold change >1.67), and was more abundant in the roots from the LD than HD treatment. Docosahexaenoic acid was more abundant in the HD than LD treatment, and was down-regulated metabolite. In conclusion, planting density was an important factor affecting quinoa yield; compared with unplanted soil, planting quinoa at low density increased the content of the important metabolite S-adenosylmethionine in the root system of quinoa, and high density cultivation of quinoa increased soil salinity and microbial abundance and diversity.

Satellite-based solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) has the potential for an early detection and accurate impact assessment of meteorological drought on vegetation photosynthesis. However, how the response of satellite SIF to meteorological drought varies under different climatic conditions and biome types remains poorly understood. In this study, we determined the drought time-scale at which the vegetation photosynthesis response was highest based on the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) and satellite SIF, and examined how the sensitivity of SIF signals from different ecosystems to drought varied along an aridity gradient in northern China. The results showed that spatial variability of the annual maximum SIF was constrained by wetness conditions and biome types. Annual maximum SIF was positively correlated with SPEI in 57.9% of vegetated lands (P < 0.05). 34.8% of humid ecosystems were characterized by a significant SIF-SPEI correlation (P < 0.05). This percentage reached 44%, 71.4% and 86.2% for arid, sub-humid and semi-arid ecosystems, respectively. The variation of SIF-SPEI correlations was a Gaussian function of the aridity index (AI), with the highest SIF-SPEI correlation appearing in the AI bin of 0.4 (0.37-0.46). The drivers for this pattern were vegetation composition and water availability. The variation of SIF time-scales in response to SPEI was a linear function of the AI, but the slope varied among biomes. To summarize with increasing aridity drought-induced declines in vegetation photosynthesis will be quicker and more significant.

Restoration has now emerged as a global priority, with international initiatives such as the “UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030)”. To fulfil the large-scale global restoration ambitions, an essential step is the monitoring of vegetation recovery after restoration interventions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the utility of remotely-sensed vegetation indices, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI), to monitor the rate of forest regeneration across a tropical forest restoration project area in Kibale National Park, Uganda. As a result, we observed non-linear patterns in NDVI and EVI across the first 25 years of recovery. Both NDVI and EVI increase for the first 10 years of forest regeneration. This “greening” phase could be used as the indicator of successful onset of forest recovery. In particular, the decline of elephant grass, which suppresses the natural regeneration of trees in our area, can be detected as an increase in NDVI. Primary forests differed from the 25-year-old regenerating forests based on the unique combination of low mean and low seasonal variation in EVI. Our results, therefore, suggest that the long-term success of forest restoration could be monitored by evaluating how closely the combination of mean, and degree of seasonal variation in EVI, resembles that observed in the primary forest.

Soil resources in East Africa are being rapidly depleted by erosion, threatening food-, water- and livelihood security in the region. Here we demonstrate how integration of evidence from natural and social sciences has supported community-led change in land management in an agro-pastoral community in northern Tanzania impacted by soil erosion. Drone survey data and geospatial analysis of erosion extent and risk, supported by communication of ‘process’ and ‘structural’ hydrological connectivity, was integrated with local environmental knowledge within participatory community workshops. Rill density data were compared between cultivated plots that had been converted from pastoral land recently and more established plots where slow-forming terrace boundaries were more established. Slope length and connectivity between plots were key factors in development of rill networks. At the two extremes, recently converted land had a rill density ca 14 times greater than equivalent established slow forming terraces. Direction of cultivation, regardless of plot boundary orientation with contours, also enhanced rill development. Evidence of this critical time window of hillslope-scale rill erosion risk during early phases of slow-forming terrace development successfully underpinned and catalysed a community-led tree planting and grass seed sowing programme to mitigate soil erosion by water. This was grounded in an implicit community understanding of the need for effective governance mechanisms at both community and District levels, to enable community-led actions to be implemented effectively. The study demonstrates the wide-reaching impact of integrated and interdisciplinary ‘upslope-downslope’ thinking to tackle global soil erosion challenges.

Land degradation due to soil erosion presents a challenge for sustainable development. We investigated the impact of land use type and land management practices on runoff and sediment yield dynamics in the northwestern highlands of Ethiopia. The study area included 14 zero-order catchments with a surface area ranging from 324 m2 to 1715 m2. V-notch weirs produced from plastic jars were introduced as measuring alternatives that met local constraints. Runoff depth at the weir was registered at 5-min intervals during two rainy seasons in 2018 and 2019. Rainfall was measured using tipping-bucket rain gauges. Runoff samples were collected in 1-L bottles and suspended sediment concentration (SSC) was determined. The mean event runoff coefficient ranged from 3% for forests to 56% for badlands. Similarly, the mean annual sediment yield (SY) was lowest for forests (0.8 Mg ha-1 yr-1) and highest for badlands (43.4 Mg ha-1 yr-1), with significant differences among land use types (14.8 Mg ha-1 yr-1 in cropland, 5.7 Mg ha-1 yr-1 in grazing land, and 2.9 Mg ha-1 yr-1 in plantations). Soil organic matter (SOM) reduced runoff and SY, necessitating the consideration of agronomic and land management practices that enhance SOM. Annual SY decreased exponentially with the rock fragment cover (RFC). In fields where RFC was less than 20%, collecting rock fragments for installing stone bunds resulted in a net increase in SY. Rehabilitating badlands and enhancing SOM content in croplands can substantially reduce catchment SY and, hence considerably contribute to the sustainability of this type of environment.

Bosnia and Herzegovina (BIH) is developing country facing extensive land degradation. As a post-conflict society with underlying poor socio-economic conditions, the value of land and its degradation status are not perceived to be an important problem neither a priority to address. BIH currently exists as a decentralized state, where land and land resources are under exclusive jurisdiction of two entities and one district, rather than state-level legislation. Complex land related administration between entities functioning independently from each other, and thus not sinchronized, leads to frequent political conflicts about land property, and limited data exchange which may exacerbate current land degradation. This paper investigates (i) the institutional setting and policy framework related to land, discussing the effectiveness and limitations of the current policies in this post-conflict society; (ii) stakeholders’ perception of land degradation under such complex institutional and policy structures; and (iii) the current state of land degradation, with a focus on soil erosion as one of the most important indicators in BIH. Communication and cooperation are major challenges for sustainable land management in post conflict societies. The existence of a policy framework is important, but not sufficient if implementation is weak and the perception of decision makers differs. Limited data on the impact of 1992 War on soil and land status represents an additional challenge to combat land degradation. Reliable national data on land degradation are crucial for assessment and development of strategic and policy frameworks devoted to those issues and to raise awareness on how to foster their implementation.

Large scale changes in land use pattern such as deforestation and machine-intensive farming process have increased carbon concentrations in atmosphere which negatively affects agricultural sector. Cross-disciplinary approaches were applied to investigate the land use changes and their impacts on the soil properties over Kanshi watershed. The results revealed that vegetation cover has been declined over the Kanshi catchment area during the last two decades. The deforestation and urbanization are the basic reasons for the fall of water tables in the Kanshi catchment area. Furthermore, the decreasing trend of rainfall and increasing trend of temperature was estimated during the last two decades. While the water discharge was decreased by 44.15 % during the last two decades in the Kanshi watershed. This substantial and significant change resultant due to climate change or increased intercession of anthropogenic activities on the earth surface. The highest stream flow was found in 1992 in the Kanshi catchment due to heavy rainfall. But in 2019, flow was on its peak value. Such variations in flow of stream increase due to fluctuations in rainfall pattern and vegetation cover resulted land degradation. 85% of local community is agreed that extensive agricultural practices, population growth, settlement patterns and brick industry have significant negative impact on vegetative cover and water discharge.

Forest transition theory posits that socioeconomic development in a country or region may cause its forestland to shift from net loss to net gain. However, forest transition may also occur under various policies, resulting in forest gains in some regions but deforestation in other regions. We used the telecoupling framework to address this crucially important issue that has rarely been examined. Using time series satellite images and statistical yearbook data from 2000 to 2020, this study seeks to understand land use change patterns, the corresponding regional spillover effects, and driving forces behind such patterns in Zhejiang Province, China. The results show that large-scale continuous deforestation has taken place since 2000, causing a total loss of forestland by 186,014 ha. In parallel with this forest loss and a slight decrease in arable land, urban construction land has soared by 169.45%. We found that developed municipalities such as Hangzhou witnessed increases in urban land at the expense of large-scale deforestation in underdeveloped municipalities such as Lishui. We believe that this cross-region land change pattern may arise from the Balance of Arable Land System (BALS) policy that seeks to achieve a goal of no net loss of cropland. Whatever land use policy—such as the BALS policy—must strike a good balance between competitive land uses that have different objectives such as residents’ living, ecology, and production. In addition to enriching the forest transition theory, this study provides a solid basis for future land use decisions in developing regions or countries.

Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) additions to grasslands increase aboveground plant biomass and modify plant community composition, thereby affect plant-derived organic carbon inputting to soil and soil C cycling and storage. However, the effects of nutrient additions on SOC decomposition and soil C sequestration have no census and their underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. This study aimed to explore the mechanisms underlying SOC decomposition and SOC content decline in the topsoil of Tibetan alpine meadows after nine-year field N and P additions. Soil and microbial stoichiometric characteristics were measured and priming effects (PEs), substrate decomposition, as well as microbial C use efficiency (CUE) by adding 13C labeled substrate (glucose or vanillin) were analyzed. N and P additions differentially affected the magnitude and direction of PEs and SOC decomposition, accelerated substrate mineralization of glucose by 33-45% and that of vanillin by 11-45%, but decreased microbial CUE of glucose by 9-15% and that of vanillin by 11-48%. This was associated with the N and P additions-induced lower soil ecological stoichiometric ratios and higher microbial C:N:P ratios compared with Control. Therefore, these comprehensive effects of N and P additions on decomposition of SOC and plant-derived C substrates reduced SOC sequestration and thus SOC content. Long-term N and P additions would weaken soil functioning as C pool of Tibetan alpine meadows.

Araucaria araucana is an iconic long-lived endangered tree species exclusively distributed in Southern Chile and Argentina. Araucaria forest ecosystems provide a myriad of ecosystem benefits to local aboriginal Mapuche-Pehuenche communities. Among the main current threats for Araucaria forests are the increasing frequency and severity of wildfires and overgrazing. This study evaluates the effect of uncontrolled livestock grazing on soil quality indicators linked to critical functions relevant to forest regeneration and ecosystem service provision. We also aim to determine a set of soil quality indicators that are sensitive enough to grazing pressure, so they are useful as early indicators of degradation or the effectiveness of restoration practices. This study evaluated twenty soil quality indicators in two contiguous degraded forest areas with contrasting grazing pressure. We observed a substantial shift in forest structure, a reduction in tree coverage on the overgrazed sites. Overgrazing has produced significant deterioration of most soil physical, chemical, and biological quality indicators making soil conditions less suitable for seed germination and sapling establishment. We also observed an alteration in C, N, and P biogeochemical pools. Besides, soil physical indicators alterations suggest changes in these soils' hydrological behavior, potentially reducing water storage, availability, and increasing runoff. We show that uncontrolled grazing in native protected areas degrades soils and forest health, restricting forest regeneration and potentially accelerating erosive processes. Our results emphasized the need for an improved conservation plan for these forests that systematically evaluates and monitors livestock grazing and all its direct and indirect effects, including soil quality.
