Influenza and Other Respiratory Viruses
4 June 2020
Dear Ben Cowling,
I would like to submit my article ‘Why
obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and ethnicities are common risk factors
for COVID-19 and H1N1 influenza infections’ authored by Daisuke Miyazawa
for publication in Influenza and Other Respiratory Viruses as a
Letter to the
editor.
I hypothesize that the reported associations between hypertension,
diabetes, ethnicities, and the severity of COVID-19 and H1N1 infection
outcomes might largely be a statistical artefact resulting from the
confounding influence of the associations between these factors and
obesity. As COVID-19 ravages the world, my paper challenges researchers
to rethink who is truly most at risk. Indeed, I believe this hot topic
falls well within the scope of your esteemed journal and would be of
interest to your readership.
I declare that this paper is original, unpublished work. There are no
financial conflicts of interest to disclose.
My biographies are as follows:
Daisuke Miyazawa
Author’s biography: Daisuke Miyazawa is a medical doctor of
ophthalmology/respiratory medicine practicing in Miyazawa Clinic, Japan.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Daisuke Miyazawa
